The Peppered Moth

The Peppered Moth is an outrageous and hilarious comic novel.

It tells the tale of public relations man Michael Peel as he tries to undertake a day’s business having undergone a mysterious transformation, forcing him to experience life from a different point-of-view.

Controversial and walking a high wire over sensitive issues, The Peppered Moth nevertheless has its heart in the right place, being a story about walking a mile in another man’s shoes and discovering a whole hidden world of bigotry and ignorance. During the course of Michael Peel’s adventures he grows as a human being, realising that he has been living with blinkers on. Like Michael Peel we all need to understand what life is like for people unlike ourselves.

On the most important day in his business calendar, Michael Peel awakes to find that he has undergone an inconvenient transformation. Melissa Viney, frequent Guardian journalist and presenter of BBC Radio 4’s “Something Understood”, describes The Peppered Moth as “a hilarious and pacey debut novel.” which “had me laughing out loud.” Inspired by the grotesque comedies of Tom Sharpe, The Peppered Moth is a lively romp through late twentieth-century London. Pitilessly skewering such monsters as a personal loan company boss but equally scathing of the out-of-control mores of political correctness, this is a blast of fresh air that tackles the delicate subject of identity with what appears to be reckless glee.

“Very, very funny. Haven’t laughed out loud so much when reading a book since I last read Tom Sharpe and actually, this was probably funnier.”

“A raucous ride, acutely observed, original, funny, weird, believable, poignant & above all a good read”

“An absolutely hilarious rip roaring adventure that had me in stitches and eagerly thumbing for the next page. It’s not often one finds a book so funny and so gripping. I will be giggling at the mishaps of Mr. Peel for some time.”

Although Michael Peel’s inconvenient transformation is only skin deep, it is a change that immediately induces hysteria in his wife. The police are called and Mr Peel finds himself on the run, the prime suspect in a murder case and the focus of a national news story. Forced to impersonate a fictitious friend, he embarks on a desperate adventure that will involve him in everything from enforced stand-up comedy to naked cycling in South London – and will test every fibre of his being. Culminating in a riot in Trafalgar Square, this is a hilarious roller coaster that will have you laughing out loud.
